  • Early Summer 2009 Bulletin - Managing grassland in May.

After a wet and very cold winter, the productivity of grassland may be suffering due to compaction, poaching and/or winter kill. Now is a good time to inspect fields and assess what actions are needed to improve the soil structure, and the sward density and content – check weed levels too.

  • Summer 2008 Bulletin - Tackling weeds and compacted ground and sowing clover to save money!
Now is the time of year to tackle areas of grassland that suffered water-logging problems during the winter and early spring. Water-logging not only means that stock cannot be grazed in these fields, it also stops oxygen getting to the roots of the sward preventing early spring growth.

  • September 2007 Bulletin - Autumn weed control.
In many years September can be too dry to guarantee a good take from a grass reseed. However this year, whether you are ploughing and working down the soil, or just wanting to top up productive grass levels with an overseed, there is moisture throughout the soil profile.

  • Early Summer 2007 Bulletin - Focus on weeds & soil nutrients, while dry weather thwarts reseeding.
Through May and June as the first cuts of silage are taken, you should be assessing your yields and forage quality – assess which fields are poor producers and therefore candidates for reseeding later in the year.

  • September 2006 Bulletin - Take advantage of ideal autumn conditions!
Whilst the weather in August may have been frustrating for arable farmers, for livestock farmers the conditions have been ideal for reseeding.
